Research Initiatives
Research Mission
Research Goal
Barry University students, staff and faculty pursue scholarly, and critical analysis of fundamental questions on the human and community experience. Research initiatives involve a variety of methodologies including interviews, focus groups, surveys, and measures.
The CARE Center’s goal for research initiatives is to increase understanding of social, emotional, behavioral, intellectual, and cultural issues that impact children, families, and the South Florida Community while promoting self-sustaining solutions through research and service.
Youth And Community Initiatives
Barry University recognizes that true change, growth, and leadership comes when our internal resources are leveraged for maximum impact. As a result, the University pursues various funding opportunities from federal, state, local government, and private corporations and foundations. More specifically, the CARE Center seeks grants that support the University’s mission to serve under resourced and underrepresented populations.

College Reach Out Program (C.R.O.P.)
Since 1999, Florida Department of Education has supported Barry University’s College Reach- Out Program (C.R.O.P.) through funded grant awards. The primary objective of CROP is to provide academic and psychosocial supportive services to low-income, educationally disadvantaged students in grades 6 through 12 that motivates and prepares them to attend college and complete their postsecondary education.
Barry University’s CARE Center recognizes that individual, familial, school, community, and peer factors have a great impact on a student’s development, whether, academic, personal, and career. As a result, Barry-C.R.O.P. is the only program of its kind in the state of Florida to offer therapeutic counseling services to its participants and family members in addition to other academic and supportive services. Our goal is to eliminate barriers to school achievement and facilitate academic and personal success.

Family Wellness and Strengthening Program
(Barry University’s Family Wellness and Strengthening Program supports children’s prosocial development across their lifespan, empower parents, strengthen the family, and prepare children for a lifetime of success.)
CARE Center’s Family Wellness and Strengthening Program serves as an ecosystem of support for children and families in our community. Families, parents/caregivers, and children are afforded high-quality programs to equip them with vital tools and skills to increase their protective factors and strengthen the family environment, which in turn will support children’s development and parent/caregiver well-being. This is accomplished through the delivery of two family-parenting interventions tailored to support the child and parent: Strengthening Families 7-17 years program (SFP) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
Goal
The goal of the Strengthening Families 7-17 years program (SFP) is to help parents and children develop happier family relationships, improve mental health outcomes, and help decrease youth alcohol and drug use, violence, and delinquent behavior.
The goal of the Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is to help children and families deal with the aftermath of a traumatic experience and promote healing, while helping parents build necessary skills to enhance child-parent interactions and connect their child’s behavioral problems to the experienced trauma.
Strengthening Families Program Services:
- 12-weeks strength-based family skills training program
- Interactive group sessions for parents and children (ages 7-17)
- Mindfulness, role-playing, discussions, music, songs, stories, learning games, and family projects
TF-CBT Program Services:
- Sessions with the child/adolescent and caregiver
- Once a week for 30 to 45-minutes for 12 weeks
- Effectively addresses many trauma impacts, including affective (e.g., depressive, anxiety), cognitive and behavioral problems
- Improves the participating parent’s or caregiver’s personal distress about the child’s traumatic experience, effective parenting skills, and supportive interactions with the child
- Available in English, Spanish, Creole, and Russian
